Once in a generation comes a recording so ambitious, so creative, so important that it eclipses all that has come before and influences all that comes after.

Patrick Donahue’s “Time Machine” is not that recording.

Instead, this three-song EP is an acceptable return to the rootsy sound that earned as many as 14 followers on Spotify. This is the music that keeps a journeyman and his bandmates playing to partially-filled venues all over Austin. The songwriting is average without being unique. The performances are adequate. The recording quality is satisfactory. In short: it’s okay.

The first track, Shady Side of the Street, is derivative walking blues, and will sound familiar to anyone who has previously encountered the genre. The title song, Time Machine, is a throwback to the finger-picking folksters of the 60’s, but without the social conscience. Seminary Hill, a bouncy little ditty about death and questionable conduct, closes out the EP.

Yes, there are better records, but you know what? There are worse ones, too. So, go on, take a listen and see what you’re missin’. It ain’t much, but it’s our little contribution to the world.
